Handmade Mudcloth Pillow Cover (Pillow Insert NOT Included)

Mud cloth, also known as “Bogolanfini,” derives its name from the Bambara language, combining "Bogo" (earth or mud), "lan" (with), and "fini" (cloth). Traditionally, men wove strips of fabric together, creating a larger canvas, while women dyed it through an intricate process.

The cloth is initially dyed with tea leaves and branches, then dried in the sun. Patterns, each with cultural, historical, and geographic significance, are painted using fermented mud and then washed. Making it fully ORGANIC and SAFE.

This process is repeated to create different patterns and hues, with a bleach mixture turning yellow areas brown. The patterns refer to historical battles, mythological concepts, or Malian proverbs and are passed down through generations, often with meanings known only to small communities.

The fabric alone on these covers tells a story and ultimately becomes a conversation piece in your chosen room. These pillow cases are made with Bogolan Mudcloth, one of the most precious fabrics you could possibly have.

MAKING: Our covers are hand-sewn in Kenya, your local artisans. The pillow backing is made of a black/white cotton canvas material with an invisible zipper.

PLEASE NOTE: Each pillow is unique and may differ in exact pattern, which is what makes them special AS THEY ARE ALSO HANDMADE. The actual color may differ from the color displayed on the screen. HAND WASH WITH MILD SOAP, as the natural dyes may fade on contact with water.

Fabric: Both sides are made from different upholstery fabric. TOP is mudcloth, BACK is canvas.

Pillow cover only (INSERT NOT INCLUDED).
Professionally finished with an overlocked stitch to prevent fraying.
Hidden zipper used for neat finish.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
Hand Wash with cold water and lay flat to dry.

INSERT SIZE RECOMMENDATION
For square pillow covers, the insert should be 1 or 2 inches larger than the cover.
